The Keep is a plain building that is the center of life at the fort. In the middle of the Keep is an open courtyard. It is an area of beauty in an otherwise spartan military fort, with well tended gardens, paths, a small outdoor chess table, and the black arch itself as the heart of it all. In the warmer months celebrations and feasts are often held here. The Keep can be entered at five points, one in the center of each side (on the ground floor), or through the underground. The first floor of the Keep is where the dining hall, kitchens, and infirmary are located. This is also the floor where most of the forts carpenters work and reside, as well as where lumber and food stores are kept. The second floor holds mostly dormitories. It also holds the library and a narrow, and rather cramped, indoor training room. The third floor is entirely dormitories and storage space, and for the time being is a pretty sparsely “populated” by anyone living there. Part if this may be because Warrick claims his living quarters here. The fourth floor is where Duran’s office is. It also has a very official looking meeting room where counsels of war are held, but also other, more peaceable meetings. There are also various store rooms here, but another prominent room is the Hall of Remembrance. The Hall of Remembrance is a place where those of the fort who have passed on are honored. There is a large stairway found on the first floor that leads to the underground caverns beneath the fort. The caverns are not extremely extensive, but they do hold Warrick’s forge, the main armory, and various storage areas. There is a tunnel from these main caverns that leads to the underground harbor. Supposedly the harbor can also be reached by a tunnel from the West Tower, but no one outside of that tower guard can confirm this. (Or perhaps, none choose to.) The underground harbor is a large cave deep within the cliffs. To reach it you must descend quite a few stairs, and it takes an average of ten minutes to get from the main caverns to the harbor if you’re just walking. The path is lit for a little while, but most of the journey is made in complete darkness, unless you supply your own light. However, once the harbor is reached it is quite a sight, being large enough to dock three ships and a number of smaller boats. |
