Located in the gatehouse is a small room used as the fort’s recruiting office.  A middle-aged vole is seated behind the desk doing some knitting, and as you enter she looks up.

“Welcome,” she says, in a voice that sounds far too deep (yet somehow still feminine) for a creature of her diminutive size.  “Here to join our fort are you?  Then you’ve come to the right place.  I’m Laurel, High Commander Duran’s wife.  You’ll usually find me in the infirmary, but, well, you’ll see soon enough that we’re a little short-pawed in certain areas around here.  Everyone is assigned a few odd jobs from time to time.

“But the recruiting office isn’t so bad.  At least, it’s very straight forward.  Here.”  She guides you to a chair in front of the desk, and by the time you’re seated comfortably Laurel is offering you a cup of cool mint tea and sending an assistant to fetch hot scones.  She seems to give the impression she does a lot of entertaining.

“Now, are you here for a civilian job or as a member of our Tower Guard?  We’re in need of both.”

As she speaks she holds out two parchment applications, allowing you to choose one.
